What is exterior polyurethane cladding?

Exterior polyurethane cladding is the common name of the decorative profile family applied to the exterior surface of the building. This family is not a surface cladding, but a set of elements: jambs around windows and doors, sills under windows, bands between floors, corbels under eaves, columns and arches at the entrance, crowns or keystones above windows. When these elements come together, the proportion, shadow, and character of the facade are established.

The material is rigid closed-cell polyurethane. The closed-cell structure stops water from advancing into the body: water absorption is below 1%, density is 150-220 kg/m³ (production target ~160 kg/m³), fire class is B2 (flame retardant), service temperature is -100 °C / +80 °C. The elements are not load-bearing and do not serve as insulation; their task is to establish the appearance of the facade.

Material comparison in exterior decoration

The same facade appearance can be achieved with stone, precast concrete, plaster, EPS (styrofoam) or polyurethane. The difference is not in the appearance, but on the facade over time and at the construction site. Precast concrete and stone are massive; they require cranes, anchors, and static calculations, and add to the building load. Plaster deteriorates against moisture outdoors; it is essentially an interior material. EPS is lightweight but not rigid on its own; it requires a layer of mesh and plaster on it; when this layer cracks, water advances inside.

Polyurethane is rigid on its own and does not require an additional coating layer; because it does not absorb water and is light, it is applied without a crane in existing building renovations. On the other hand, the texture and aging style of real stone is unique — in projects with suitable budgets and statics, stone is still a strong choice.

How is the facade project set up?

A healthy exterior facade decoration setup progresses in three steps. The first is measurement and detection: facade photography, window-door measurements and floor heights are extracted. Since high-precision 3D scanning can be done, the existing facade can be exactly modeled and the final appearance can be seen even at the project stage. The second is style and scale: a single profile family is selected; sections are proportioned to the window width and facade height. The third is quantity survey: the line of each element is measured separately, an allowance for waste is added (10% plain, 15% patterned).

The application sequence also determines the result: surface preparation, dry rehearsal, installation with PU-based mounting adhesive, joint filling, smoothing with 180-220 grit and UV-resistant facade paint. Products come primed with white 1K acrylic primer and ship on an ex-works basis.

What is exterior decoration, what products does it consist of?

Exterior facade decoration is the common name for the profile family that gives character to the exterior surface of the building: jamb around the window and door, sill at the bottom, band separating the floors, corbel under the eaves, column and arch at the entrance, keystone at the top. These elements are not load-bearing; they establish the proportion, shadow, and perception of the facade. Material selection in exterior decoration

The same appearance can be obtained with plaster, precast concrete, EPS (styrofoam) or polyurethane; the difference emerges in durability and at the construction site. Plaster deteriorates from moisture on exterior facades. Precast concrete is heavy, requires cranes and anchors, and adds to the building load. EPS is lightweight but its surface is soft, it lags behind in impact resistance and detail sharpness. Polyurethane does not absorb water, does not rot, is lightweight, and maintains the sharp detail from the mold.

How is a facade decoration project designed?

First, the window/floor layout is extracted using facade photographs and measurements; then a single profile family is selected (classic, Ottoman, modern). The sections are proportioned to the window width and facade height. Since high-precision 3D scanning is possible, the existing facade can be exactly modeled and the final appearance can be seen as a render in the project phase.

What products do polyurethane exterior elements cover?

The facade program is grouped into five main categories. Window and door jambs form the frame of the openings and reduce thermal bridges. Columns are paired with 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 80 cm diameters; plain, fluted, and helix bodies and Doric, Ionic or Corinthian capitals. Cornice and eave profiles define the upper line of the facade, sills define the underside of the windows. Corbels and brackets give a load-bearing appearance under overhangs and balconies. Crowns, arches, and motifs are used at focal points such as entrances and balconies.

At what point does the polyurethane facade element differ from styrofoam (EPS)?

The difference starts with density: rigid polyurethane is produced in the 150-220 kg/m³ (production target ~160 kg/m³) range, the production target is ~150-220 kg/m³ (production target ~160 kg/m³); EPS, on the other hand, has a much lower density. For this reason, in severe hail storms, EPS surfaces are punctured and cratered, while polyurethane maintains its structural integrity. The closed-cell structure absorbs less than 1% water, the temperature range is -100 °C / +80 °C; the material does not work dimensionally. Its fire behavior is in the B2 (hardly flammable) class: thanks to the phosphorus-based flame retardants in the raw material, it extinguishes itself when the flame source moves away.

How is exterior installation done?

The sequence is mandatory. 1) The surface is cleared of dust, oil, and moisture; loose plaster and paint are scraped off. Because the material has a high density, it is not cut with a utility knife; a fine-toothed hand saw or a miter saw is used, and 45° miters are made at the corners. 2) Silicone-based adhesive is not used; PU-based mounting adhesive (Polure Polfix) is applied as a continuous line to both the surface pressing on the wall and the joints of the parts, the overflowing part is wiped with a damp cloth before drying. 3) Screws are mechanically mandatory: outdoors, the parts are mutually screwed to each other, the screw heads are embedded into the material. 4) Joints and screw heads are filled flush with exterior filler putty, when dry, they are smoothed with 180-220 grit sandpaper.

How should paint, primer and UV protection be?

The white industrial acrylic primer from the factory is a technical base for paint adhesion; if the topcoat is not applied, the product fades over time under the influence of UV rays. Before paint and primer, the entire surface is slightly matted with 180-220 grit sandpaper and cleaned — mold release residue used in production can cause the paint to flake off. A critical rule for warranty: whichever brand the topcoat paint is, the primer must be the same brand's system primer; otherwise, paint manufacturers do not accept responsibility for blistering and peeling. Highly elastic, UV-resistant exterior facade systems are preferred outdoors.

In which building types is it used?

The application area is not limited to a single building type. In villas, the character of the facade is determined by the trio of jamb, column, and cornice. In wedding halls, wide facades are emphasized with series of crowns, arches, and columns; in commercial facades such as hotels, cafes, and shops, brand visibility comes to the forefront. In apartment and housing estate projects, a fast and light facade renovation is made with repeating window jambs. How are size, custom production, and price determined?

For an offer, the measurement of the application area in linear meters or m², up-to-date photographs, and location information are required. If cladding is to be done, the widest point of the element to be clad is measured, and the inner diameter of the column is selected larger than this measurement; if it is to bear a load, the iron carcass passing through takes over the carrying task — the polyurethane column does not carry loads, and concrete is not poured into it. Models, motifs, and dimensions not in the catalog can be produced with 3D scanning and CNC; 3D design and on-site discovery are subject to a fee. Does exterior polyurethane cladding provide thermal insulation?

No. These products are decorative facade elements; they are not insulation products and are not included in insulation calculations. If there is sheathing on the facade, the elements are applied over the sheathing in a compatible manner.

Can it be applied to the facade of an existing building later?

Yes. Because they are lightweight, they do not require a crane and are mounted directly when the surface is solid, clean, and dust-free. If there is blistering, rubbing, or moisture on the facade, this problem must be resolved first.

Do exterior decoration products add load to the building?

Polyurethane exterior decoration elements are lightweight; compared to precast concrete, the load they put on the building is very low. For this reason, it is preferred in existing building renovations. The elements are not load-bearing, they are decorative cladding.

How long does the exterior decoration application take?

The duration depends on the facade area and the number of elements. Because polyurethane profiles are lightweight, no crane is required; they are mounted with adhesive and mechanical support, which significantly shortens construction time compared to precast concrete.

Do facade decoration products have to be painted?

Yes. The products come primed with white 1K acrylic primer; UV-resistant facade paint must be applied outdoors. The paint determines both the color and the lifespan of the surface against UV rays.

Do polyurethane exterior facade elements deteriorate in rain, snow and frost?

They do not deteriorate. Because the closed-cell structure absorbs less than 1% water, the material does not rot, swell, or mold. Since the service temperature range is -100 °C / +80 °C, cracking is not observed in the freeze-thaw cycle.

Are they resistant to hail and strong winds?

Yes. Thanks to the 150-220 kg/m³ (production target ~160 kg/m³) density, it is not punctured and cratered like styrofoam in severe hail. For wind resistance, it is mandatory to use adhesive and screws together during assembly, and to screw them mutually from the joints.

Can the products be used unpainted?

They should not be used unpainted. The white acrylic primer from the factory is a technical base, not a topcoat; the unpainted surface will yellow and fade over time due to UV effects.

Which paint and primer should be used?

Highly elastic, UV-resistant exterior facade paints are suitable. For warranty purposes, the primer should be the system primer of the topcoat paint brand.

Does it add extra load to the building, is a load-bearing system required?

The elements are lightweight, they do not add additional static load to the facade. Polyurethane columns are decorative and do not carry loads; if a load is to be placed on them, an iron carcass passed through the inside takes over the bearing, concrete is not poured inside.

How does it behave in case of fire?
