Wood-Look Polyurethane Log Models

A polyurethane log is a hollow rigid polyurethane profile moulded from the texture of a solid timber log. It gives a genuine log appearance on ceilings and walls and, being hollow, can be lifted to the ceiling by one person and fixed with adhesive and screws. What is a polyurethane log and how does it differ from beams and rafters?

All three are wood-textured polyurethane; the difference is the proportion of the section. A log is close to square (for example 100×100, 200×200) and imitates a solid tree trunk. A beam is distinctly wide and flat (for example 350×320, 200×125) and reads as a structural member. A rafter is slim and tall (for example 75×157), representing the closely spaced members of a roof pitch. Anyone searching for a “log” is therefore looking for the square-section product completed with end caps and brackets.

Which sizes are produced?

There are nine sections and a single standard length of 3 metres. The section follows ceiling height and span: 100×100 suits a 2.60-2.80 m ceiling, while 200×200 and above stay legible in tall rooms.

Comparison with a solid timber log

The same look can be achieved in timber, but weight, cracking, insects and maintenance enlarge the project. The measurable differences on the polyurethane side are these.

Completing parts: end caps and brackets

The log profile is hollow, so an open cut end spoils the effect. An end cap is produced in the same size for every section. Brackets are used where the log meets the wall: they resolve the junction and give a load-bearing impression. Brackets and caps arrive with the same texture and primer as the log.

Where is it used?

Logs used outdoors must always be sealed with a UV-resistant facade paint.

Installation and paint in brief

Cutting is done with a fine-tooth hand saw or a mitre saw; the material is too dense for a utility knife. Fixing is both chemical and mechanical: a PU-based mounting adhesive is applied in an uninterrupted bead, the part is cross-screwed, and screw heads are sunk and filled.
