Polyurethane, GRC and EPS Facade Mouldings

Choosing between polyurethane, GRC and EPS for facade mouldings depends on weight, installation method, detail level, coating application, fire information and facade type. Polure produces made-to-order polyurethane decorative profiles.

Polyurethane, GRC and EPS are three different facade material options assessed according to the building system, detail expectations and installation conditions. Polyurethane is suitable for lightweight decorative profiles with fine details, GRC for cement-based precast applications, and EPS for lightweight facade solutions used with render and mesh within an exterior insulation system. The appropriate choice is made by reviewing the facade system and installation details together.

Short answer: Which material suits which application?

Polyurethane can be considered for renovation projects and classic facades with fine details when a lightweight, workable and made-to-order profile is required; GRC can be considered for new buildings where anchor and structural connection planning is possible; EPS can be considered for facades developed together with an exterior insulation system.

  • Polyurethane: Its lightweight structure, fine-detail production and suitability for adhesive installation make it suitable for renovation facades and decorative window surround applications.
  • GRC: It is a glass fibre reinforced, cement-based precast material; anchors, structural connections and an application plan may be required for heavier components.
  • EPS: It is expanded polystyrene foam; on exterior facades, it is applied with render and mesh, most often as part of an exterior insulation system.

What are these materials?

Polyurethane, GRC and EPS are decorative exterior facade materials with different production structures and methods of attachment to the facade.

  • Polyurethane: Polure exterior facade mouldings are produced from high-density rigid cast polyurethane profiles, with density information indicated by 150-220 kg/m³.
  • GRC: It is a glass fibre reinforced, cement-based precast material.
  • EPS: It is expanded polystyrene foam, completed on the surface with render and mesh coating.

Weight and installation

Polyurethane is a lightweight decorative material, and installation uses PU-based mounting adhesive together with mechanical fixing where required.

  • Polyurethane: The surface is prepared, PU-based mounting adhesive is applied and the component is pressed into place; curing information is considered through 60–90 min clamping in the adhesive, full strength after 2–3 days. Heavy or wide components receive mechanical support with screws and wall plugs.
  • GRC: It is heavier than polyurethane and may require anchors, structural connections and scaffolding planning.
  • EPS: It is a lightweight material applied as part of an exterior insulation system; render, mesh and surface layers must be planned together.

Silicone is not used for polyurethane installation. Installation service is assessed within a quotation according to the project size and location.

Detail, surface and coating

For fine and defined profile details, polyurethane can be adapted to different classic and modern forms through mould production.

Polure polyurethane products arrive factory-primed with white 1K acrylic primer and are coated on site in the desired colour. Joints are filled with paintable acrylic filler, then 180-220 grit sanding is applied and the surface is prepared for coating.

For GRC surfaces, the cement-based precast character is considered, while EPS applications reflect the surface appearance created by render and mesh coating. For all three materials, surface preparation before coating and the coating system to be used should be selected according to the project conditions.

Fire information

For Polure polyurethane products, the fire rating B2 (DIN 4102-1) and phosphorus-based flame retardant additive information are considered.

For GRC and EPS, classification information should be checked in the manufacturer's classification document. The facade requirements of the building regulations are assessed together with the project designer.

Comparison by application location

Material selection is made according to the facade type and installation conditions.

  • Renovation facade: Polyurethane can be considered because of its lightweight structure and suitability for adhesive installation.
  • New building: An anchor and structural connection plan is prepared for GRC; for polyurethane and EPS, a detail plan compatible with the facade system is prepared.
  • High-rise facades: For GRC applications, component weight, lifting method, anchors and scaffolding planning are examined particularly carefully.
  • Classic facade with fine details: Polyurethane can be adapted to fine ornamentation and profile details through mould production.
  • Facade with an exterior insulation system: EPS is applied as part of the exterior insulation system; polyurethane mouldings are positioned after reviewing the surface, adhesive and mechanical support details.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a GRC exterior window surround?

A GRC exterior window surround is a decorative facade profile produced from glass fibre reinforced, cement-based precast material. It may be heavier than polyurethane and may require anchors, structural connections and an application plan.

Is GRC or polyurethane lighter?

Polyurethane is a lighter decorative exterior facade material than GRC. Polyurethane installation uses PU-based mounting adhesive, with mechanical support added by screws and wall plugs for heavy or wide components.

Can EPS window surrounds be used on exterior facades?

EPS window surrounds can be applied on exterior facades with render and mesh coating as part of a suitable exterior insulation system. Surface layers, the coating system and facade details should be determined according to the project conditions.

What is the fire rating of polyurethane exterior window surrounds?

For Polure polyurethane exterior window surrounds, the fire rating is indicated as B2 (DIN 4102-1), and the phosphorus-based flame retardant additive information is considered. The facade requirements of the project are assessed together with the relevant building regulations and the project designer.

Which material can be applied to a facade with an exterior insulation system?

On facades with an exterior insulation system, EPS is part of the system applied with render and mesh coating. Polyurethane mouldings can also be used after reviewing surface preparation, PU-based mounting adhesive and required mechanical support details.

Which material provides finer facade details?

Polyurethane is suitable for fine and defined decorative details and can be adapted to different profile and ornamentation forms through mould production. The appearance of details in GRC and EPS is shaped by the production method and the applied surface layers.
