Column types and sizes

Polyurethane columns come in three types: plain, fluted and twisted. Each is available as a full round (free-standing) or as a half column (two shells against a wall or an existing pier). Shaft diameters run from Ø10 cm to Ø38 cm, the standard length is 240 cm and 260 cm in the twisted range.

Do columns carry load? How is cladding done?

A polyurethane column is decorative and carries no load. Where a roof, concrete or marble load exists, an internal steel frame carries it; filling the column with concrete is not recommended. When cladding an existing pier, measure its widest point and choose an inner diameter larger than that, otherwise the two half shells will not close at the vertical joints. In steel construction, thermal expansion joints are absorbed with elastic mastic so metal movement does not appear as hairline cracks.

What determines column prices?

A column is not priced as one piece: shaft, capital and base are separate items. For the shaft, diameter and length drive the cost; for the capital, the order (plain Doric, voluted Ionic, acanthus Corinthian) and its workmanship; for the base, the size. Fluted and twisted shafts carry more mould work than plain ones. Counting is simple: one shaft per visible column, plus one capital and one base each. Where are they used?

On facades, entrance features, under-balcony and terrace columns give vertical rhythm; indoors, full round columns suit living rooms and hall transitions while pilasters suit narrow walls.
