Material Properties and Technical Limits
Architectural pediments are produced from rigid closed-cell polyurethane with a density range of 150-220 kg/m³ (production target ~160 kg/m³). This high-density core ensures structural rigidity while maintaining a low weight profile. The material exhibits a water absorption rate below 1%, making it highly resistant to rot, swelling, and moisture degradation. Thermal stability spans from -100 °C / +80 °C, ensuring dimensional integrity across extreme climate conditions.
It is essential to note that these pediments are strictly decorative components and do not possess load-bearing capacity. Polure pediments arrive factory-primed to receive final topcoats. While the factory primer provides a base layer, applying an additional jobsite primer remains an optional best practice depending on the specific topcoat chemistry used.
Proportional Selection and Dimensioning Criteria
Selecting the correct pediment profile requires evaluating the overall scale and ratio of the door or window opening. A pediment that is disproportionately high or wide disrupts the visual balance of the elevation. As a general architectural rule, the width of the pediment base should align with or slightly overhang the outer edge of the vertical trim or pilaster casing.
- Base Width: Match the total width of the window frame plus side trims.
- Projection Depth: Ensure projection depth clears any existing flashing or drip edges.
- Architectural Style: Select peaked, curved, or segmented profiles based on the facade geometry.
Measurement, Material Takeoff, and Cut Allowance
Accurate field measurement prevents structural gaps and material shortfall during installation. Measure the total exterior width of the trim casing where the pediment will rest. Because pediment returns and crown profiles require precise 45-degree miter cuts at junction points, add a 10% to 15% material waste allowance to the calculated linear requirement.
Before mounting, verify that the substrate surface is completely clean, structurally sound, and dry. Removing dust, loose masonry, or flaking paint ensures proper bonding of adhesives to the wall surface.
Field Mounting Sequence and Fastening Protocols
Proper installation requires combining chemical bonding with direct mechanical anchorage. Silicone adhesives must never be used for structural bonding of polyurethane pediments, as they lack long-term shear strength. Instead, apply a continuous bead of heavy-duty polyurethane (PU) mounting adhesive along the back contact surfaces of the pediment.
Mechanical fixing with corrosion-resistant screws is mandatory to anchor the component securely to the wall substrate. Drive screws through designated structural points on the pediment face, countersinking the screw heads slightly below the surface level. For masonry walls, utilize appropriate wall plugs in conjunction with stainless steel screws.
Joint Finishing, Sanding, and Painting Rules
Once the polyurethane adhesive has cured and mechanical fasteners are secured, fill all screw holes and joint seams with an exterior-grade polyurethane or acrylic filler. After full curing of the filler, sand the filled areas smooth using 180-220 grit sandpaper to achieve a uniform, seamless surface transition.
For exterior applications, applying a high-grade UV-resistant paint is mandatory to protect the polyurethane matrix from long-term solar degradation. Apply at least 2 coats of exterior topcoat paint. An additional field primer layer remains optional but recommended prior to applying specialized architectural topcoats.
