Technical Material Characteristics and Load Limitations
Plain polyurethane architectural columns are constructed from closed-cell rigid polyurethane with a structural density ranging between 150-220 kg/m³ (production target ~160 kg/m³), target-manufactured at approximately 150-220 kg/m³ (production target ~160 kg/m³). This high-density formulation yields exceptional dimensional stability and a water absorption rate under 1%, making the profiles completely impervious to moisture, rot, and severe atmospheric exposure.
The material remains thermally stable within an operational temperature range of -100 °C / +80 °C. However, a critical technical constraint must be noted: plain polyurethane columns are purely decorative and carry absolute non-load-bearing status. Under no circumstances should these decorative shafts, capitals, or bases be utilized to bear structural building loads, roof weights, or overhead beam stress.
Dimensional Selection and Architectural Proportioning
Selecting the correct plain column profile requires matching the column diameter and overall height to the existing ceiling height and structural bay spacing. In typical architectural layouts, column diameter should maintain a proportional ratio relative to the vertical clearance to prevent visual overload in enclosed areas.
- Interior Spaces: Standard clear heights of 2.70 m to 3.00 m generally accept column shaft outer diameters between 15 cm and 25 cm.
- Exterior Facades: Portico structures and double-height entrances exceeding 3.50 m vertical clearance require larger column profiles, often utilizing 30 cm to 40 cm outer diameters to preserve visual balance from a distance.
- Sectional Types: Full round columns are ideal for free-standing decorative applications, whereas half-round (pilaster) columns suit flush wall-mounting scenarios over structural concrete or steel cores.
Field Measurement and Quantity Calculation
Accurate field measurement prevents costly layout modifications during assembly. To calculate the required column height and profile quantities, measure the distance from the finished floor to the ceiling or soffit at three separate points along the installation axis to account for floor slab or ceiling deflections.
Total column height consists of three distinct components: the base element, the central plain shaft, and the capital. Deduct the combined height of the base and capital from the total vertical opening to determine the net required shaft length. Always factor in a 5% to 10% material allowance for trimming and 45-degree miter cuts at junction points.
Mechanical and Adhesive Mounting Standards
Installing plain polyurethane columns demands a dual-fixing approach combining chemical bonding and mechanical anchors. The receiving substrate must be completely clean, dry, structural, and free of loose dust or oil.
All profile connection joints must be cut precisely using a 45-degree miter saw where alignment angles demand. Application of a dedicated polyurethane (PU) assembly adhesive along all contact faces is required. The use of standard silicone adhesives is strictly prohibited due to inadequate bond strength and plasticizer migration over time.
In addition to polyurethane adhesive bonding, mechanical fixing with corrosion-resistant screws is mandatory to lock the column sections securely to the underlying substrate until the adhesive cures fully.
Surface Finishing, Priming, and Exterior Painting
Plain polyurethane column components are supplied with a factory-applied primer coat. While this factory layer provides initial protection, an additional architectural primer is optional depending on the specified topcoat chemistry and environmental exposure levels; stating that no primer is ever needed is technically incorrect.
Once mechanical screws are installed, counter-sink the screw heads below the profile surface. Fill all fastener recesses and joint seams with polyurethane-compatible exterior joint filler or architectural putty. After complete curing, sand the filled areas smooth using 180-220 grit sandpaper.
For exterior installations, applying a minimum of two coats of high-grade UV-resistant exterior paint is mandatory to protect the polyurethane matrix from solar degradation and color shifts.
Pre-Purchase Technical Checklist
