Vertical Lines of Classical Architecture: Fluted Pilaster Columns
As one of the most prominent elements of classical architectural tradition, pilasters are defined as vertical column projections integrated into the wall surface. The parallel grooves on the shaft—known as fluting—create elegant transitions of light and shadow, enhancing the sense of depth. Spanning from ancient Greek and Roman structures to today's modern projects, this aesthetic language defines vertical boundaries and visually elevates ceilings. Manufactured by Polure, these rigid polyurethane (PU) elements combine the lightweight handling and durability required by modern construction sites, far surpassing traditional plaster or marble alternatives.
High-Density Structural Features
Our product range features designs manufactured at a high density of 150-200 kg/m³. This density provides a surface hardness comparable to wood while maintaining a lightweight structure that simplifies transport and installation. Thanks to its closed-cell formulation, the water absorption rate is below 1%, completely preventing swelling, rotting, or deformation in humid environments. Maintaining dimensional stability at temperatures ranging from -20°C to +80°C, our products do not expand or contract.
Model Options and Scale Diversity
We offer a wide range of models to perfectly match the volume and architectural scale of your projects:
- P5014 (140 mm): Measuring 20x140x2000 mm, it creates an ideal vertical accent for narrow hallways, niche frames, and door trims.
- P5015 (150 mm) and P5020 (200 mm): These mid-scale models are highly preferred for residential projects, living room wall divisions, and symmetrical layouts.
- P5030 (300 mm) and P5040 (400 mm): Perfect for adding a structural column look to spacious lounges, restaurants, and high-ceilinged lobbies.
- P5050 (500 mm) and P5060 (600 mm): Deliver a prestigious visual impact in large-scale hotel projects, villa facades, and monumental entrance designs.
Produced at a standard length of 2400 mm, the shafts can be easily cut and customized to match your project's height requirements.
Advantages Over Plaster and Wood Materials
Traditional decorative materials like plaster and wood present various challenges during installation and long-term use. Plaster is highly vulnerable to moisture, leading to cracking and crumbling, while wood is prone to insect infestation, warping, and moisture-induced rot over time. Our rigid PU material eliminates all of these disadvantages. Its high impact resistance ensures long-lasting durability. Unlike soft and fragile EPS foam (styrofoam) alternatives, it delivers a high-quality architectural finish with sharp, crisp lines and smooth surface details. When needed, the surface can be easily filled, sanded, repainted, and repaired.
Surface Preparation and Painting Guidelines
Our products are shipped with a factory-applied primer coat. This primer layer provides a technical foundation that enhances topcoat adhesion. However, since paint manufacturers do not guarantee topcoat applications without their own proprietary primers, applying an additional primer coat prior to painting is entirely optional and at the user's discretion. Polure assumes no responsibility and offers no warranty regarding the performance of the paints used. Both water-based and solvent-based paints can be safely applied to our products.
Usage Areas
Fluted Pilaster Column designs offer a wide range of applications for both interior and exterior spaces. Indoors, they are highly favored in residential entryways, fireplace surrounds, TV unit backdrops, bookshelf borders, and wall divisions in spacious living rooms. They are also used to create a classic gallery atmosphere in hallways by establishing a rhythmic, repeating pattern. Additionally, they serve as elegant vertical paneling elements behind headboards and dining room consoles. For exterior designs, they are positioned on both sides of main entrance portals and along the vertical edges of window casings to evoke the feel of structural columns. In commercial spaces such as hotels, restaurants, wedding venues, and prestigious office projects, they stand out as one of the most effective decorative solutions to break wall monotony and highlight vertical axes. Thanks to their closed-cell structure, they can be safely installed in high-humidity areas like spas, bathrooms, and indoor pools. The material's high impact resistance also makes it ideal for wall protection and aesthetic framing above baseboards in high-traffic areas like corridors and lobbies.
Installation
Installing Fluted Pilaster Columns requires following specific technical steps in sequence to ensure a long-lasting result. First, ensure the application wall surface is completely clean, dry, and smooth. Mark the installation line on the wall using a spirit level. For mitered joints and length adjustments, use a 45-degree miter saw or a fine-toothed hand saw. Never use silicone-based adhesives during the bonding stage; instead, use only polyurethane (PU) construction adhesive. Because it is a heavy and vertical element, mechanical fastening with screws in addition to adhesive is MANDATORY. After fastening, cover screw holes and joints with a high-quality filler. Once dry, sand smooth with 180-220 grit sandpaper. An optional primer coat can then be applied, followed by at least two coats of paint to complete the process. For exterior applications, seal joints with exterior-grade filler and protect the surface with UV-resistant exterior paint. In outdoor installations, properly filling joint gaps is critical to accommodate seasonal temperature fluctuations. Choosing stainless steel screws for mechanical fastening prevents rust stains under outdoor conditions.
Care Information
Maintaining Fluted Pilaster Columns is exceptionally practical. For interiors, accumulated dust can be easily removed from the grooves using a soft vacuum brush attachment or a slightly damp cloth. Avoid using abrasive chemicals, acidic solvents, or wire brushes that could damage the surface. For exterior installations, rinsing with water once a year is sufficient to remove dust and dirt buildup. Since unpainted raw surfaces can yellow when exposed to UV light, choosing UV-resistant paints for outdoor use directly extends the product's lifespan. If you wish to change the color over time, the surface can be lightly sanded and repainted to restore its original look. Thanks to the high dimensional stability of our products, they do not crack or separate during humidity shifts, eliminating the need for periodic joint filler renewals.
