Cornice Length Calculator: How Many Lengths Do You Need?

Enter your room size to calculate how many lengths of cornice, beam or log profile you need, including waste and corner cuts, then request a quote.

The length calculator works out how many lengths of cornice, beam or log profile your room needs, including the waste allowance. Enter width and length for a rectangular room, or the total length for an L-shaped room, a window surround or a facade. The result is an estimate; the exact quantity and product choice are confirmed in the quote.

Step-by-Step Application

  1. Measure the perimeter — In a rectangular room the perimeter is 2 × (width + length). For an L-shaped room, a window surround or a facade, measure each edge the profile will run along and add them up.
  2. Deduct the openings — Subtract the widths of doors and windows the profile will not run across. Ceiling cornice usually runs continuously above these openings, so nothing is deducted.
  3. Add the waste allowance — Add 10% waste for plain profiles and 15% for patterned profiles. On a patterned profile, lining up the pattern at corners and joints leaves more offcuts.
  4. Divide by the profile length — Divide the total including waste by the profile length and round up. Cornice comes in lengths of 2400-2440 mm; the calculation uses the lower limit of this range. Beams and log profiles are taken as 3000 mm.
  5. Plan the corner cuts — At every inside and outside corner two pieces are joined with a mitre cut. Allow for twice as many mitre cuts as there are corners.
  6. Request a quote — Send the result together with your measurements. Product choice, cutting plan and adhesive quantity are confirmed in the quote.

Length calculator

Enter your measurements and press Calculate; the net length, waste allowance, number of lengths and corner cuts are shown below.

Values used in the calculation

The calculator only uses recorded product information. The exact length of each product is given on its product page; for a product with a different length you can enter that length yourself.

InformationRecorded value
Cornice length2400-2440 mm
Beam and log profile length3000 mm
Waste allowance (plain profile)10%
Waste allowance (patterned profile)15%
Mounting adhesivePU-based mounting adhesive

Example: a 4 × 5 m room

A 4 × 5 m room has a perimeter of 18 m. Ceiling cornice runs continuously above doors and windows, so nothing is deducted; 10% waste is added for a plain profile and the total is divided by the cornice length and rounded up. Four inside corners need eight mitre cuts. Enter the same size in the calculator to see the number of lengths straight away.

Adhesive quantity

Installation uses PU-based mounting adhesive. The amount needed depends on the profile cross-section and the substrate, so the calculator does not show it; it is stated in the quote together with the product.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much cornice I need?

Measure the perimeter of the room; in a rectangular room it is 2 × (width + length). Deduct the openings the profile will not run across, add the waste allowance, then divide the total by the profile length and round up.

How much waste should I allow?

Allow 10% for plain profiles and 15% for patterned profiles. On a patterned profile, lining up the pattern at corners and joints leaves more offcuts.

How long is one length of cornice?

Cornice comes in lengths of 2400-2440 mm. The calculator uses the lower limit of this range to stay on the safe side; the exact length of each product is given on its product page.

Should I deduct doors and windows?

Cornice fitted where the wall meets the ceiling usually runs continuously above doors and windows, so nothing is deducted. For skirting, borders and window surrounds, deduct the widths the profile will not run across.

Is the result the exact order quantity?

No, the result is an estimate. When you send your measurements with a quote request, the product, cutting plan and adhesive quantity are confirmed in the quote.
