What Is a Window Surround Ornament and What Is Its Architectural Function?
Window surround ornaments are decorative elements such as corner blocks, pediments and keystones that complete the profiles used around windows and doors, both visually and technically. Chosen to add movement to classical and contemporary façades, these details give buildings greater depth and character when viewed from the outside. Technical Properties and Material Structure
Polure window surround ornament designs are manufactured from rigid PU material with a density of 150-220 kg/m³ (production target ~160 kg/m³). This density provides hardness comparable to wood while keeping the product exceptionally lightweight. The material's closed-cell structure delivers several important technical benefits:
- Water Absorption: Below 1%. This prevents the material from absorbing moisture in wet weather and protects it from rot and deterioration.
- Temperature Resistance: It maintains its shape without deformation at temperatures between -100 °C / +80 °C.
- Dimensional Stability: Structural deformation such as shrinkage, expansion or warping caused by temperature changes is not observed.
- Fire Classification: The material is difficult to ignite and is self-extinguishing when the flame source is removed.
- Surface Preparation: Products are supplied with a factory-applied primer.
Important Information About Priming and Painting
The factory primer applied to our window surround ornaments prepares the surface for painting. However, paint manufacturers do not provide a warranty for surfaces painted directly without using their own primer products. For this reason, applying an additional primer after installation is optional and remains the customer's choice. Polure accepts no responsibility and provides no warranty for the performance of paints applied to its products. For exterior applications, UV-resistant exterior paint must be used to prevent unpainted rigid PU material from yellowing under sunlight. Water-based or synthetic paints may be used indoors.

The material's impact resistance reduces damage during handling and installation on construction sites to almost zero.
Usage Areas
Window surround ornaments can be used extensively on both building exteriors and interiors. In exterior façade designs, they are positioned at the upper corners of windows, above door openings, at the corner junctions of string courses and in keystone applications as decorative transition elements. Indoors, they are used as decorative accents at the upper corners of door casings, around fireplaces, at the corners of large wall panels and where ceiling coving meets at a corner. These decorative elements are frequently chosen to give villas, hotels, residential projects and historic building restorations a classical or contemporary façade character.
Installation
Installing window surround ornaments requires the following technical steps for a durable result: 1. Surface Preparation: The application surface must be clean, dust-free, moisture-free and dry. 2. Cutting: Mitre cuts at 45 degrees should be made at corner joints. 3. Bonding: Apply polyurethane (PU) installation adhesive to the back of the product. Silicone adhesive must never be used. 4. Mechanical Fixing: Exterior applications and large pieces must be mechanically secured with screws. 5. Finishing and Filling: Cover joints and screw heads with exterior-grade filler, then smooth them with 180-220 grit sandpaper after drying. 6. Painting: After an optional additional primer coat, apply at least two coats of UV-resistant paint as the final step.
Care Information
Rigid PU window surround ornament models are highly durable and require little maintenance. For cleaning, simply remove surface dust with a soft, slightly damp cloth that contains no chemical solvents. Abrasive chemicals should be avoided because they can damage the paint layer. For exterior applications, renewing the surface with UV-resistant paint every few years after light sanding, depending on the condition of the paint, will further extend the product's service life.
