Where Architectural Light Meets Aesthetics: Illuminated Columns
Serving as both functional light sources and decorative masterpieces in modern architectural design, Illuminated Columns seamlessly blend vertical spaces with pure elegance. Unlike heavy traditional marble or stone structures, these next-generation designs are crafted from rigid polyurethane-based materials, rising elegantly without adding static load to your projects. Part of the Polure product range, these decorative elements enhance spatial depth, offering distinct visual identities by day and night. Combining antique column capitals with clean, modern lines, these designs are highly sought after for everything from landscape arrangements to grand hotel lobbies.
Technical Parameters and Material Structure
All products in our Illuminated Columns category are manufactured from high-density rigid polyurethane. The primary advantage of this material is its impressive density of 150-220 kg/m³ (production target ~160 kg/m³). Offering a hardness comparable to wood, this density ensures high impact resistance while keeping the products exceptionally lightweight. Thanks to its closed-cell structure, the water absorption rate is below 1%, which completely prevents rotting, swelling, or cracking, even in humid climates or under heavy outdoor precipitation.
Exhibiting superior dimensional stability against temperature and weather fluctuations, these products maintain their shape perfectly between -100 °C / +80 °C. Additionally, the self-extinguishing property of the material prevents flame propagation once the ignition source is removed. This is a crucial safety standard for lighting columns that house internal electrical wiring.
Size Options and Design Integration
Available in various dimensions to suit the scale of your projects, our models integrate flawlessly with any spatial volume. In our collection, the prominent KASUT30A and KASUT30B models stand out with a height of 3 meters, while the KASUT50A and KASUT50B models, designed for more monumental spaces, reach a height of 3.5 meters. Specifically, the 640x799 mm base dimension of the KASUT50B model ensures the column remains perfectly balanced against wind loads and ground movements.
The hollow interior of the columns serves as an ideal conduit for LED strips, spotlights, or traditional wiring systems. Protecting cables and drivers from outdoor moisture significantly extends the lifespan of the system. For Illuminated Columns used on facades or in gardens, a UV-resistant paint application is mandatory. Since the unpainted rigid body material can yellow over time when exposed to sunlight, it must be coated with protective exterior paints post-installation.
Surface Preparation and Primer Application
Every decorative polyurethane lighting column model leaving the Polure factory comes with a special factory-applied primer. This primer is designed to enhance paint adhesion. However, paint manufacturers do not guarantee direct painting applications without their own proprietary primers. Therefore, applying an additional primer coat post-installation is entirely optional and at our customers' discretion. Polure does not guarantee or accept liability for the performance or durability of the topcoat paints used. Compatible with both water-based and synthetic paints, these surfaces can be easily customized to match your project's color palette.
Advantages Over Plaster and Wood Alternatives
- Lightweight and Durable: Unlike fragile plaster columns, they carry no risk of cracking during installation. They significantly reduce transport and labor costs compared to marble or cast-iron alternatives.
- Moisture and Rot Resistance: Unlike wood, they do not rot from moisture, attract pests, or warp over time. Assess water and moisture exposure using the product technical data, surface finish and installation details.
- High Detail Quality: They offer a much harder surface and sharper, smoother details compared to EPS polystyrene materials. They are highly resistant to dents and physical impacts.
- Easy Repairability: Any scratches that may occur over time or screw holes from installation can be easily filled, sanded, and restored to their original pristine condition.
Proper Planning in Architectural Projects
Illuminated Columns are utilized in hotel entrances, luxury villa projects, and historical building restorations not only for decoration but also to provide essential security lighting. Positioned symmetrically along pathways, these columns ensure even light distribution, preventing eye strain. The modular structure of the products facilitates easy on-site installation, while internal static support pipes provide high resistance against wind loads.
Creative Lighting Solutions and Ambiance Design
In architectural projects, the direction and intensity of light can completely transform spatial perception. Illuminated Columns diffuse light indirectly through fluted channels on the shaft or hidden compartments beneath the capital, avoiding direct eye contact. This technique is ideal for creating the relaxing and sophisticated ambiance desired in prestigious hotel lobbies and grand ballrooms. The column shafts are available in fluted or smooth designs to maximize the play of light and shadow. Consequently, when illuminated, the column's three-dimensional motifs become more pronounced, evoking a profound sense of depth.
In outdoor landscape designs, these products are used to define walkways and establish secure pathways. Positioned at the corners of garden walls, poolside areas, or the start of pathways, Illuminated Columns create an elegant contrast with natural greenery. The high dimensional stability of the rigid body prevents any deterioration in the pedestal bases, even when in direct contact with soil moisture. This ensures that projects maintain their aesthetic appeal for years without requiring intensive maintenance.
Sizing Criteria to Consider When Selecting Products
When choosing Illuminated Columns, the ceiling height of the installation area or the scale of surrounding outdoor structures must be carefully considered. For instance, in indoor spaces with ceiling heights exceeding 4 meters, the 3.5-meter KASUT50 series offers balanced proportions, whereas the 3-meter KASUT30 series is a more suitable alternative for lower ceilings or narrower garden entrances. Pedestal and capital widths should be planned so as not to restrict pathways. The modular designs we offer at Polure provide architects with immense flexibility, featuring shaft structures that can be easily cut to height on-site.
Usage Areas
Thanks to their versatile structural properties, Illuminated Columns offer highly functional decorative solutions with a wide range of application scenarios in both indoor spaces and outdoor landscapes. In indoor applications: - They are positioned as guiding and aesthetic light sources in high-ceilinged hotel lobbies, reception welcome areas, and prestigious ballrooms. - They are preferred in large restaurant projects and luxury residential designs to highlight corridor transitions, divide spacious halls, or define the base of staircases. - They serve as complementary elements that strengthen architectural character in exhibition halls, museum entrances, and grand lobbies of public buildings. In outdoor applications: - Symmetrically placed on the left and right sides of villa entrance gates, they provide secure lighting at night and a majestic presence during the day. - They offer uniform ambient lighting along walkways in expansive gardens, driveways, poolside relaxation areas, and open terrace borders. - In restoration projects and classical facade designs, they are used to support exterior lighting with an artistic form. With their rigid outer body, they exhibit long-lasting durability against windy and rainy outdoor conditions. Additionally, they are frequently preferred as decorative backstage lighting in outdoor event venues and wedding hall gardens.
Installation
Installing Illuminated Columns requires meticulous planning due to their vertical structure and integrated electrical wiring. First, the installation surface must be completely clean, dry, and level. For outdoor installations, a concrete foundation is highly recommended. Next, route the underground electrical cables through the hollow center of the column. When assembling the column components (pedestal, shaft, capital), a high-strength polyurethane (PU) assembly adhesive must be used at the joints; standard silicone adhesives should never be used during installation. If necessary, make a 45-degree miter cut at the joints of the shaft pieces to ensure a perfect fit. Given the height of the products and potential wind loads, mechanical fastening with screws is mandatory. After securing, cover the screw heads and joints with a high-quality exterior filler. Once the filler is dry, sand the surface with 180-220 grit sandpaper to achieve a smooth finish. Clean the surface thoroughly before applying the primer. Complete the installation by applying two coats of water-based or synthetic topcoat paint over the optional primer. Using UV-resistant paint is essential for outdoor applications.Assess water and moisture exposure using the product technical data, surface finish and installation details. For large KASUT50 models, inserting a metal support pipe inside the shaft to increase static strength and anchoring this pipe to the ground with steel expansion bolts is a vital step for structural safety.
Care Information
Illuminated Columns require exceptionally low maintenance, thanks to the inherent benefits of their rigid raw material. Never use abrasive chemicals, acidic solvents, or stiff brushes for cleaning; dust and dirt residues can be easily wiped away using only a damp, soft microfiber cloth. For outdoor columns, an annual inspection is recommended to check the condition of the joint fillers and exterior paint. If minor wear occurs due to environmental factors, the columns can be easily restored to their original look with localized filling, light sanding, and paint touch-ups. When internal lighting elements like LEDs or bulbs need replacement, the wiring can be safely accessed via the service hatch on the column capital or the removable top section. Additionally, periodic inspections of the electrical installation by a qualified electrician are recommended to ensure continuous system safety.
