Full circular columns are decorative architectural elements designed with a round cross-section shaft, capital, and base to create an aesthetic accent and impart a classic architectural appearance to spaces. Being non-load-bearing structural elements, they are frequently preferred as standalone decorative features or as cladding systems around existing steel or reinforced concrete posts.
Material Structure and Key Features
Our products are molded from high-density rigid polyurethane raw material with a density of 150-220 kg/m³ (production target ~160 kg/m³). Thanks to their closed-cell structure, the moisture absorption rate remains below 1%. This prevents the material from rotting, molding, shrinking, or warping even in direct contact with water. Their broad operating temperature range of -100 °C / +80 °C ensures structural integrity without deformation in both freezing cold and extreme heat.
Comparison with Traditional Architectural Materials
Compared to traditional wood, plaster, or concrete materials, polyurethane offers the following technical advantages:
- Compared to Plaster and Concrete: Significantly lighter in weight. It imposes no extra load on building facades or floors, allowing for safe and practical installation. Its resilient, impact-resistant structure minimizes the risk of cracking or breakage.
- Compared to EPS Foam: Features high surface hardness. Mold-casting techniques ensure exceptionally crisp pattern details, fluting lines, and decorative motifs. The surface easily accepts filler and sanding.
- Compared to Wood: Unaffected by outdoor weather conditions, insect infestation, or moisture. Requires minimal maintenance and delivers long service life.
Surface Preparation and Painting Guidelines
Full circular columns are delivered with a factory primer coating applied during manufacturing. This primer helps paint adhere to the product. However, paint manufacturers do not guarantee adhesion without using their recommended priming systems. Therefore, applying an additional coat of primer is optional, and final responsibility rests with the installer. Polure offers no warranty regarding the performance of paints applied to the products.
For exterior applications, using UV-resistant paints is mandatory. A properly executed paint application shields the column surface against weathering and sun exposure, preserving its original look for years.
Usage Areas
Full circular columns cater to a versatile range of applications. In residential projects, they are preferred to create impressive entrance portals, verandas, and patio areas. Indoors, they add architectural depth to hotel lobbies, wedding venues, ballrooms, restaurants, spacious hallways, and commercial retail concepts.
Additionally, they can be split and wrapped around existing round or square structural concrete pillars to transform unappealing structural elements into refined architectural cladding.
Installation
For a successful and safe installation, follow these technical steps precisely:
- Surface Preparation: Ensure floor, wall, or ceiling mounting surfaces are completely dry, clean, and free of dust.
- Cutting and Alignment: Cut and align column shaft sections, capitals, and bases to the required dimensions using precise 45° miter joints where applicable.
- Adhesion: Apply polyurethane (PU) assembly adhesive to contact points and joints. Never use silicone adhesive for installation.
- Mechanical Fastening: In addition to adhesive, mechanical screw fixing is mandatory to safely secure the weight of the column components.
- Touch-up and Sanding: Fill joint seams and screw heads with suitable filler. Once dry, sand smooth using 180–220 grit sandpaper.
- Topcoat Painting: After optional priming, complete the installation by applying at least two coats of water-based or synthetic paint.
Care Information
Maintaining polyurethane full circular columns is straightforward. Dust and surface grime can be easily wiped away using a damp cloth and mild non-abrasive soapy water. Avoid harsh acidic or solvent-based chemical cleaners. For exterior installations, if paint wears over time, lightly sand the surface and apply a fresh coat of exterior-grade paint.
