The Short Roman Columns category brings the timeless elegance of classical architecture into modern design, blending functionality with rich decorative appeal. Crafted from high-density polyurethane (150-200 kg/m³), these columns offer a wood-like hardness and durability. Unlike heavy traditional stone or plaster pillars, their lightweight structure adds no unnecessary static load to the building. Typically designed in heights ranging from 50 cm to 120 cm, these vertical architectural elements are ideal for defining spaces, creating display pedestals, or supporting exterior balustrades.
Architectural Design and Dimensional Characteristics
Inspired by ancient Roman and Greek orders, our Short Roman Column models are enriched with Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian capital details. Shaft designs are available in sleek, smooth cylindrical forms as well as classic fluted patterns. Exhibiting exceptional dimensional stability, these polymer components are highly resistant to temperature fluctuations, preventing structural deformations such as shrinking, expansion, or warping. Thanks to their closed-cell structure, water absorption is below 1%, ensuring they will not swell in humid environments.
Structural Advantages Over Traditional Materials
Choosing the right material directly impacts both labor costs and the longevity of a building. Compared to alternative decorative materials, our polyurethane products deliver superior physical performance:
- Vs. Plaster/Gypsum: While plaster is highly fragile and prone to chipping, these rigid polymer columns offer high impact resistance and do not crumble or produce dust.
- Vs. Wood: Completely resistant to moisture, mold, rot, and pests, with zero risk of swelling or fiber splitting.
- Vs. EPS Foam: They feature a much higher surface hardness, preventing dents and ensuring crisp, sharp, and smooth ornamental details.
- Insulation and Safety: Contributes to thermal and acoustic insulation. They are flame-retardant and self-extinguishing once the ignition source is removed.
Surface Preparation and Painting Guidelines
Our products come pre-primed with a factory-applied white undercoat, designed to improve topcoat adhesion. However, paint manufacturers do not guarantee against peeling on surfaces painted directly without their own specific primers. Therefore, applying an additional primer coat before painting is optional and at the installer's discretion. Polure assumes no liability for the performance or durability of third-party paints. For outdoor applications, using UV-resistant exterior paint is mandatory to prevent unpainted material from yellowing. During installation, joints must be bonded with polyurethane (PU) adhesive, and screw holes or seams should be filled with a suitable filler and sanded smooth using 180-220 grit sandpaper.
Usage Areas
Short Roman Columns offer versatile design options for both interior and exterior architecture. Indoors, they serve as elegant space dividers at the ends of half-walls separating living and dining areas, or as decorative transitions in hallways and entryways. Topped with marble, glass, or wood, they transform into exquisite pedestals for displaying sculptures, vases, or lighting fixtures. Outdoors, they make a grand statement at villa entrances, veranda borders, terrace balustrade systems, and staircases. For exterior use, finishing with a UV-protected paint is essential to withstand harsh weather conditions.
Installation
To ensure a long-lasting installation of Short Roman Columns, follow these technical steps: Ensure all mounting surfaces are clean, dry, and free of dust. If height adjustment is required, make precise cuts using a fine-toothed hand saw or miter saw. Apply a continuous bead of polyurethane (PU) construction adhesive to all contact points; silicone-based adhesives must not be used. In addition to the adhesive, mechanical fastening with screws is MANDATORY to secure the column, even though it carries no heavy load. Countersink the screws slightly, fill the holes and joints with a suitable filler, sand smooth with 180-220 grit sandpaper once dry, and apply two coats of paint over an optional primer.
Care Information
Thanks to their durable polymer structure, maintaining Short Roman Columns is effortless. Dust can be easily wiped away with a damp microfiber cloth. Avoid using thinners, bleach, acid-based descalers, or abrasive scrubbing pads, as these chemicals can damage the paint. Mild soapy water is the ideal solution for periodic cleaning.
